FAYETTE, Mo. - The Central Methodist baseball team opened Heart of America Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Estes Field, splitting a doubleheader with Baker. The Eagles (6-8, 1-1 HAAC) lost the first game 13-4 but rebounded to win the second contest 5-4 over the Wildcats (11-10, 1-1 HAAC).

In the first game, the Wildcats used a seven-run fourth inning to build a 10-0 lead. Miles Sanderson led off the top of the second inning with a solo homer to left field to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage before the run outburst in the fourth frame.

Three consecutive doubles plated a total of three runs. Later in the inning, Justin Lane hit a three-run homer to left center.

Mike Allen got Central Methodist on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. His two-run double down the left field line scored Brian King and Neil Hansen.

Eli Bowers had a RBI double to right field in the bottom of the sixth for the Eagles to score the team's third run. Mason Mershon singled to right center in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Daniel Peters for the final margin.

Chris Cummins (3-1) earned the victory with a complete game performance on the mound. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits and struck out 12.

Rhett Quinlan (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Quinlan and AJ Pfeifer struck out four batters apiece.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game before the Eagles rallied late to win. Central Methodist got its first run in the bottom of the first off a sacrifice fly by Steve Bazner. King scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit in half.

Kyle Poynter reached base on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning and later scored when Allen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. On a 1-1 count In the next at-bat, Neal DeMartin posted the game-winning single up the middle to score Peters and Hansen.

"It was just great being one of the new transfer guys to be able to contribute to our first conference win," DeMartin said after the game.

Drew Greiwe (2-2) picked up the win, tossing a complete game, giving up four runs, two earned, on nine hits while fanning nine.

Nathan Wheelock (2-3) took the setback after�surrendering five runs, one earned, on eight hits in 5.2 innings on the mound.

Central�Methodist will travel to Benedictine for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 21. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
