Baseball loses two Saturday at Evangel

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.� � Central Methodist dropped a pair of Heart of America Athletic Conference baseball games Saturday at Evangel, leaving both teams tied for first place in the conference standings and Eastern Division with one week to play in the regular season.

Wes Clay's RBI single with two out in the bottom of the seventh at Crusader Field delivered a 1-0 win for Evangel (31-14, 16-6 HAAC) in game one.

Blake McKnight (10-2) got the win on the mound, firing a four-hit shutout.�

Mike Wagner was 2-for-3 at the plate for Central Methodist (20-10, 16-6 HAAC). Jesse Zellner and T.J. Singh each had one hit in game one.

Tyler Paule (3-3) suffered the loss but pitched strong, allowing only one earned run on six hits in six and two-third innings. He also had five strikeouts.

After the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two on a Zellner RBI double, Evangel scored four runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a three-run advantage. The Crusaders opened up a 5-1 lead with three more runs in the sixth.

Christian Maciel went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Evangel.

Matt Myers (7-4) pitched a complete game allowing six hits, one unearned run with one walk and two strikeouts.

Wagner (6-2) dropped his first outing on the mound in the last four decisions, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits in six innings. He also posted six strikeouts.

Zellner was 2-for-3 in game two. Daniel Peters, Dustin Ray, Kyle Poynter and Mike Allen each had one hit.

Central Methodist concludes the regular season with a four-game series against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) on Friday and Saturday. First pitch in Friday's doubleheader at Estes Field is set for 1 p.m. CT.

Evangel hosts Graceland (Iowa) in a four-game series on Friday and Saturday.
