MARSHALL, Mo. - Central Methodist took the first two of four games against Missouri Valley on Friday by scores of 14-3 and 7-4 at Indian Foothills Park. The Eagles have now won 16 straight against the Vikings dating back to 2010.
Central Methodist (18-16, 10-6) erased a 3-0 deficit in game one with nine runs in the top of the fourth inning, as the Green and Black pounded out all 14 runs in the final four innings. The Eagles loaded the based to start the fourth with Hayden McMillon and Kyle Poynter walks followed by a C.J. Regan bunt. Eli Bowers then stepped to the plate and delivered a two run double, trimming the deficit to 3-2. A RBI single by Nick Galenti tied the game, and T.J. Singh's two-run double two batters later gave Central Methodist the lead for good. A Jesse Zellner two-run single made the score 7-3. Zellner scored when Regan was hit by a pitch to make the difference five runs. A Bowers' sacrifice fly made the score 9-3.
The Eagles added one run in the fifth and seventh innings and three in the sixth for the final margin.
A Lucas Doerhoff three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning gave Missouri Valley (7-25, 6-14) a 3-0 edge before the Eagles' offense exploded for 14 runs on 14 hits. The visitors were also helped by four Viking errors in the first contest.
Regan and Poynter each had three hits and two runs scored. Regan also had three RBIs and two runs scored, while Poynter scored twice. Singh and Neil Hansen each totaled two hits. Singh tallied three RBIs and two runs scored. Hansen was one of nine Eagles that crossed home plate at least once. McMillon drew two walks and scored twice.�
Anthony Corona had two hits in the loss.
Jeff King (3-4) went the distance for the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with a season-high eight strikeouts and three walks.�
Braden Evans (0-5) took the loss on the mound, giving up seven earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks in three and one-third innings.
A Regan RBI groundout in the second inning gave his team a 1-0 edge in game two.�
Josh Felz connected on a three-run homerun in the third to give the Vikings a two-run cushion, but the Eagles answered in the fourth, tying the contest on Zellner and Poynter RBI doubles.�
Central Methodist regained the lead in the fourth, as Singh belted a two-run bomb to left. Singh's team-leading seventh yardjob of the season made the score 5-3.
A Bowers' RBI double in the sixth made the score 6-3. A Poynter RBI single in the top of the next frame gave the Eagles a four-run upper hand.
A Felz RBI single in the bottom of the frame trimmed the Vikings' deficit to three runs, but Reese Johnson induced a groundout to Wagner to end Missouri Valley's rally.
Zellner and Poynter each had three hits in game two. Poynter had two RBIs and a run scored, while Zellner drove in one and scored twice. Singh finished with two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.�
Felz had four hits, four RBIs and a run scored.
Alex Hunter (3-2) got the win with six innings of work on the mound, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts against one walk. Johnson (1) got the save pitching one inning out of the bullpen, surrendering just one earned run on two hits with a strikeout.
Kevin Key (1-5) dropped the decision, allowing seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six and two-third innings.
The two teams conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. CT.
