Wagner, CMU oust Missouri Valley

Wagner, CMU oust Missouri Valley

JOPLIN, Mo. - Mike Wagner threw a complete game, two-hit shutout and struck out a season-high 13 as six-seed Central Methodist eliminated seven-seed Missouri Valley from the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship Series with a 7-0 win at Wendell Redden Stadium.

Central Methodist (21-25), which advances to face four-seed Culver-Stockton (Mo.) on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT in another elimination game, put Missouri Valley (10-33) in an early deficit scoring one run in the top of the first inning on a Jesse Zellner RBI double.

Wagner contributed to his cause at the plate in the seventh inning, blooping a single to left field that scored Kyle Poynter.

The Eagles blew the game open with five runs in the ninth, capitalizing on Missouri Valley defensive miscues. A Vikings throwing error, wild pitch and passed ball allowed three Eagles to score, increasing the margin to 5-0. A Poynter two-run single plated T.J. Singh and Hayden McMillon for the final margin.

Wagner improved his record to 4-4 on the mound this season and was 1-for-4 at the plate with a RBI and walk. McMillon and Poynter each had two hits and a run scored. Poynter ended with two RBIs. Singh drew two walks.

Seven different Eagles scored one run.

Anthony Corona and Lucas Doerhoff each had one hit in the loss.

Kevin Key (2-6) picked up the loss on the mound, going seven and one-third innings while allowing two earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The winner of Saturday's Eagles/Wildcats affair advances to play in another elimination game at 7 p.m. against the winner of two-seed Evangel (Mo.)/five-seed Baker (Kan.).
