KANSAS CITY - Avila (Mo.) posted two late-inning come-from-behind victories over Central Methodist in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Saturday at Zarda Athletic Complex, winning game one 2-1 and the second contest 7-4.
Central Methodist (14-13, 4-6) scored the first run of game one in the top of the fifth inning when a Jake Buhmann sacrifice fly scored Matt Olsen. Ian Walsh was working on a no-hitter until the bottom of the seventh when Avila (19-10, 8-2) countered with a Brandon Chandler game-winning two-run double. This came after Kyle Simmons led off with a triple to break up Walsh's no-hit bid and Stephen Montisano bunted for a base hit.
Cody Lewis got the win in a complete game on the mound, allowing one earned run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Walsh suffered the loss but went the distance, allowing two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
Central Methodist staked to a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning of game two. Brad Cuyos delivered a solo shot to left to lead off the top of the second which was followed by a Hayden McMillon crossing home on a fielder's choice. A Cuyos RBI double in the next frame made the difference three before Avila cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third by scoring on a Central Methodist error and a Troy Prasertsit RBI single.
A Buhmann sacrifice fly in the fifth increased Central Methodist's lead back to two at 4-2 before Avila scored five runs in the eighth to win the game. The first three Avila batters were hit by a pitch in the frame, and a Chandler two-run double followed which tied the contest. With two outs, Montisano scored on a RBI walk to give the home team the upper hand for good.
Alex Quiros got the win on the mound with an inning of hitless relief with a strikeout. Jamie Good earned a save with an inning of two-hit, shutout ball.
Pitcher Michael Scott suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs without recording an out. Jeff King got a no-decision, going seven innings and allowing just two runs, one earned, on four hits with nine strikeouts and a walk.
Cuyos was 3-for-5 in game two with two RBIs and a run scored.
Central Methodist travels to Ottawa (Kan.) for a doubleheader Monday, March 30, at 2 p.m. CT.
