CMU splits doubleheader with Hannibal-LaGrange

FAYETTE, Mo. - Central Methodist responded from a 5-4 game-one loss to Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) with a 10-1 victory in the nightcap at Estes Field. The Eagles and Trojans split a doubleheader for the second time in seven days.

Central Methodist (24-23) staked to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one after Logan Bradley went deep to left center for the sixth time this year.

Hannibal-LaGrange (17-28) countered with three runs in the top of the sixth, including a solo homer by Seth Brown and two-run dinger from Matt Jones. The Eagles retook a one-run lead with two runs in the home half of the inning with two outs. Bradley and Drew Gandy scored on bases-loaded walks, but Hannibal-LaGrange scored two in the seventh on a Victor Bautista double to center to claim the win.

Brown and Jones each had two hits.

Cole Lankford (2-0) earned the win on the mound, tossing one and one-third innings of hitless relief.

Bradley finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Scott Huesemann (0-4) dropped the decision, giving up two earned runs with a strikeout and three walks in two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.

After each team traded a run in the first inning, Central Methodist seized momentum with nine runs in the next two frames. Coach Nate Breland's unit put three on the board in the second inning, including a two-run double by Chance Sugg.

The Eagles blew the affair open with six runs in the third, as four of the six hits in the frame were doubles. Five of the six runs were scored on two-base knocks. A Brad Cuyos two-run double to left center made the score 6-1. Gandy touched home on a Brennan Hurley double to left. A Joba Ferrell RBI single to right gave the home team a seven-run edge. Two runners scored on a Bradley double to center for the final margin.

Ferrell was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Sugg, Hurley and Jake Buhmann each had two hits. Sugg, Bradley and Cuyos each drove in two. Hurley and C.J. Regan each scored twice. Regan also walked twice.

The Eagles totaled a single-game school record seven doubles in the win.

Pitcher Matt Olsen (1-1) earned the win in his first start, allowing one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk in four innings. Jeremy Karasewski, Jared Green and Grant Davis combined for three innings of perfect relief with two strikeouts.

Five Trojans had one hit in the loss.

Kyle Bender (2-4) took the loss on the mound, giving up nine earned runs on as many hits with two walks in just two and one-third innings.

Central Methodist and Culver-Stockton (Mo.) conclude the regular season with a four-game, Heart of America Athletic Conference series Friday and Saturday at Estes Field.
