FAYETTE, Mo. - Central Methodist dropped the first two of a four-game series Friday to Culver-Stockton (Mo.) by scores of 10-5 and 7-5 at Estes Field. The Eagles fall into a tie with the Wildcats for seventh in the Heart of America Athletic Conference standings.
In game one, Culver-Stockton (14-35, 9-15) jumped out to a 10-0 lead, including eight runs in the first three innings, through the middle of six before Central Methodist (24-25, 9-15) tried to answer. After Joba Ferrell scored the Eagles' first run on a Chance Sugg triple, Logan Bradley went deep with a two-run homer to center in bottom of the sixth. Two runs scored on a Sugg's fielder's choice in the seventh, but the home team was unable to get any closer.
Jake Pott had three hits, six RBIs and two runs scored in the win.
Brock Kartheiser (2-5) went the distance on the mound for the win, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits with nine strikeouts.
Pitcher Ian Walsh (5-4) took the loss, giving up eight runs, four earned, on 11 hits with three strikeouts and three walks in four innings.
Five different Eagles had one hit. Sugg and Bradley each had two RBIs.
Brad Cuyos gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two with a two run bomb to left center.
Culver-Stockton trimmed the deficit in half with a run in the third inning before plating five in the top of the fifth. The Eagles cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the inning on a Hayden McMillon RBI single.
A Brennan Hurley RBI single in the sixth was followed by a Ferrell sacrifice fly, but coach Nate Breland's squad would get no closer. An Alonso Ruz sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh proved to be the final margin.
Pott had three hits in game two.
Pitcher Daniel Smith (5-3) picked up the win in a complete game, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
Dustin Dalton (2-2) dropped the decision, giving up six earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks in four innings.
McMillon finished 3-for-4 at the plate.
The two teams conclude the regular-season Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. CT.
