No. 20 Eagles Split on Opening Day

No. 20 Eagles Split on Opening Day

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – The No. 20-ranked Central Methodist University baseball program opened the season down south at Our Lady of the Lakes (Tex.), splitting the doubleheader after taking game one (1-0) and dropping game two (3-1).

GAME ONE (W 1-0)

Teams remained scoreless in game one until the fourth inning when Z Westley (SR/Midland, Mich.) went the distance over the centerfield wall on a 0-0 count. His homerun gave Central the win as the lone score of the game.

Julio Canales (SR/Canovanas, Puerto Rico) was the only other player to connect at the plate, recording two hits in the contest.

Kenny Otero (SR/Rio Grande, PR) earned his first win on the mound after tossing seven innings. He recorded 10 strikeouts and surrendered just four hits in the contest.

GAME TWO (L 3-1)

In game two, the Saints got out to a 3-0 start after a strong second inning that saw a homerun and a double RBI. Mason Schwellenbach (SR/Saginaw, Mich.) was able to bring Logan Haring (SR/DeKalb, Ill.) home in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit, but Central was unable to close the gap through the remaining three innings.

Ryan McGorrian (JR/Algonquin, Ill.) and Garcia were also able to record one hit each in the contest.

Nick Merkel (JR/Spokane, Wash.) was charged with the loss after tossing 3.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits and striking out one. Cody Malan (SR/Springfield, Mo.) and Felix Pena (JR/Bronx, N.Y.) each saw time on the bump to close out the game.
