KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 20-ranked Central Methodist University baseball team earned a convincing 20-2 win over Bethany (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon at the Ruben Foster Classic.
The Eagles had one of its best offensive outputs in program history after putting on a hitting clinic against the Swedes. The squad scored 20 runs on 18 hits with just seven trips to the plate.
Bethany struck first with a homerun in the opening frame, but Central responded with 15 runs through the second and third innings. Devon Garcia (SR/Bowling Green, Ohio) lit the match with a triple in the second inning that brought in two runs. Mason Schwellebach and Kenny Otero (SR/Rio Grande, PR) also recorded run-scoring hits in the inning. A three-run homer from Adrian Martinez (JR/Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) highlighted a 10-run showing in the third frame.
Things quieted down in the fourth, but the Eagles notched another five runs over the next two innings to round out the scoring. Logan Haring (SR/DeKalb, Ill.) scored one runner with a single to center in the fifth frame while homeruns from Sergio Macias (SR/Laredo, Tex.) and Jose Mieses (SR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) headlined the sixth inning.
Otero earned the start at the mound, surrendering two runs on one hit and punching out three batters through three innings. Isaiah Davis (JR/Indianapolis, Ind.) took the win after striking out two opponents through two innings, followed by brief appearances from Nate Swenson (SO/Lewisburg, Kan.) and Blakeney Kearbey (SO).
Central will return to action on Monday, February 17th, to compete in the final day of the Ruben Foster Classic. They are set to square off against Tabor at 11 AM, followed by a matchup against Missouri Baptist at 1:30 PM.
