Marshall, Mo. - The No. 4 Central Methodist baseball team picked up two wins against rival Missouri Valley College by scores of 4-0 and 12-0 Friday afternoon in Marshall, Mo.
The Eagles improve their overall record to 25-3 and 12-1 in Heart action, while MVC falls to 10-20 and 3-11 in the conference.
Kenny Otero got the start on the bump in game one, tossing a complete game and giving up just four hits and one walk through seven innings of work. The senior from Rio Grande, Puerto Rico also collected a season high nine strikouts to earn his sixth win of the season.
The Eagles jumped out in front in the top of the third courtesy of a two-run home run from senior first basemen Logan Haring, his 10th of the season. He finished the afternoon batting two-for-four.
Central added its final two runs in the sixth and seventh innings courtesy of Mason Schwellenbach and Logan McDonald to solidify the 4-0.
CMU followed with a stellar offensive performance in game two, collecting runs in five of the seven innings including three in the second, fourth and sixth. Nick Merkel threw six complete innings, giving up only two hits, and a walk with nine strikeouts. Felix Pena closed the game out in the seventh, retiring the side in order including two strikeouts.
Haring once again led the offense, batting .600 with three hits, four RBI and two home runs. Devon Garcia and reigning Heart Player of the Week each homered, as Garcia drove in three runs and Martinez two.
With five total hits in today's game, Haring is now just two hits shy of breaking the all-time career hits record at CMU, currently held by head baseball coach Nate Breland (241).
The Eagles will close out the weekend series with the final two games against MVC Saturday, April 3 with first pitch for game one set for 1:00 p.m. in Marshall.
