Eagles pick up series sweep of Statesemen; knock off (RV) Columbia College

The No. 4 Central Methodist baseball team swept Heart member William Penn in a four game series this past weekend in Oskaloosa, Iowa and knocked off (RV) Columbia College 5-4 in a single nine inning game at Estes Field Tuesday night.

With the wins, Central improves its overall record to 31-4.

The Eagles began the week with two wins over William Penn Saturday, defeating the Statesmen by scores of 3-0 and 2-1. Nick Merkel got the start on the bump in game one, tossing six innings and giving up only three hits and four walks while not allowing a run. He also struck out seven batters.

Kenny Otero finished the game batting two-for-three with an RBI single. Logan Haring also picked up an RBI single.

Game two was a pitcher's duel, as Mason Schwellenbach picked up the win, throwing six innings and giving up only one run on five hits with six K's.

After falling behind early in game three, the Eagles went on to score four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to earn the 6-2 win.

Otero pitched a complete game, giving up only two earned runs on five hits and striking out five batters. Sergio Macias batted one-for-two including a three run home run and two walks. Haring, Schwellenbach and Devon Garcia each drove in a run as well.

The Eagles once again came from behind to edge William Penn, 3-2 in the finale. Macias collected the game winning two RBI single in the fifth to put Central out in front for good. Dylan Brister got the start on the bump and tossed three complete innings and striking out three batters.  Tyler Vicars earned the win, pitching 1.1 innings and giving up only one hit.

Central then returned home for a single nine-inning game against Columbia College Tuesday night at Estes Field. Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, CMU scored five runs on four hits and an error to take a 5-3 lead. Despite giving up one run in seventh, the Eagles held on for the final two innings to earn a gutsy 5-4 win.

Haring collected his 13th home run of the season in the fifth inning, driving in two runs. Deshawn Cole and Otero each drove in a run as well. Isaiah Davis picked up his first victory of the year, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing only one hit and one walk through 14 batters faced.

The Eagles remain at home for a four game series against Benedictine College beginning Saturay April 17 with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. at Estes Field.
