Eagles fall in HAAC Tournament quarterfinals

ATCHISON, Kan. - No. 7-seed Central Methodist's 2015 postseason came to an end Thursday after a 75-62 loss at No. 2-seed Benedictine (Kan.) in Ralph Nolan Gymnasium. The 16th-ranked Ravens move on to the Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament semifinals Saturday.

Central Methodist (20-12) jumped out to a 7-2 lead after Quinten Hunter canned a 3-pointer at the 16:13 mark of the first half, but Benedictine (24-7) scored five-straight points to gain its first advantage of the night three minutes later following a Jake Schannuth trey.

After Mike McCode buried a bucket from distance to put the Eagles ahead 16-13, the Ravens countered with 12-straight points as part of a 17-4 spurt in a 5:49 span. A Christian Hatterle trey gave Benedictine a 33-20 edge, but Central Methodist closed the half on an 8-0 run to trail by only five points, 33-28, at the break, following a Cody Anderson fastbreak layup as time expired.

The Eagles used a 7-0 run, ending with a Mitchell Farr 3-pointer, to knot the contest at 37 with 15:41 left. However, Benedictine followed with its own 7-0 run that seemed to put the game out of reach. A John Harris Jr. jumper gave the Ravens a 55-44 lead midway through the second half, and the Eagles were unable to close within two possessions the rest of the way.

Harris Jr. finished with 31 points on 14-of-17 shooting. Jallen Messersmith tallied 14 points, while Jonathan Anaekwe had 10 points and seven rebounds.

McCode ended with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting overall and a 3-of-4 effort from deep. Hunter added 16 points. Farr and Anderson recorded 13 and 10, respectively. Scott Stegeman pulled down eight rebounds.

Farr finishes his collegiate career in 31st place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,076 points in just two seasons for the Green and Black.

Each team shot better than 48 percent from the floor.
