CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – In a back-and-forth battle between two Heart of America Athletic Conference programs, Central Methodist topped Mount Mercy on the road after Isaiah Thurmond (SR/Alton, Ill.)'s layup with 1.1 remaining lifted the team to a 67-65 victory.
Tonight's play began where the game left off on Saturday after a leaky roof in the Hennessey Center postponed the contest with 16:10 left to play in the second half. When the game was called, Central Methodist had a mere four-point advantage.
Mount Mercy controlled the game for most of the first half, but it was the Eagles who fought their way back. The squad put together a 10-4 run to overcome a seven-point deficit in the final five minutes. The grind continued for both teams in the second half, as neither squad led by more than three points with in the final 15 minutes.
The Eagles trailed by one with under two minutes remaining, but back-to-back baskets from Thurmond and Josh Robinson (JR/Normal, Ill.) gave the team a three-point advantage. The Mustangs answered with a three-point basket to tie the game with time winding down, but not before Thurmond scored the game winning layup through contact to seal the deal.
The Eagles (15-13, 10-12 Heart) finished the game shooting 39.4 percent from the field, forcing 23 turnovers and collecting 10 steals. Thurmond led a pack of four double digit finishers for the Eagles, posting 16 points en route to the victory. Isiah Sykes (JR/Holt Summit, Mo.) and Christian Soderholm (JR/Peru, Ill.) both finished with 11 points, while Robinson rounded out the top scorers with a total of 10. Sykes also led the team in rebounding with six and steals with three.
Up next for Central Methodist will be a trip to William Penn University tomorrow evening. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
