Canton, Mo. - Trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half, the Central Methodist men's basketball team mounted a furious comeback to earn a 76-66 victory over Culver-Stockton College, Saturday afternoon in Canton, Mo.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 9-12 and 6-10 in conference play, while the Wildcats fall to 5-9 and 4-9 in the Heart. Today's victory also marks the second win in the last three games for Central.
The Eagles found themselves in an early hole, trailing CS-C by double-digits in the opening 11 minutes of the first half. Central closed the half on a 25-15 scoring run, tying the game at 35-35 entering the halftime break.
Both teams exchanged baskets in the opening five minutes of the second half and remained deadlocked at 42-42 with 15:22 remaining in regulation. Senior forward Fode Camara put CMU out in front with a basket in the paint at the 15:18 mark.
Central never looked back as they maintained a lead throughout the rest of the half, pulling ahead by many as 12 points en-route to a 76-66 victory.
Chandler Bevans led the offense with 16 points, shooting six-of-seven from the field and four-of-six from the charity stripe. The duo of Jonathan Brown and Austin Fisher each scored 12 points, including two three-point baskets from Fisher. Camara was the final Eagle to reach double figures, recording 10 points along with five rebounds, and three steals.
Jayden McGrew dished out a team-high four assists, followed by Brown with three.
Collectively, the Eagles were extremely efficient from the field, shooting 30-of-59 for 50.8-percent. The defense held Culver-Stockton to just 41.1-percent shooting.
The Wildcats just edged CMU on the glass, grabbing 34 rebounds compared to 30 for Central. Senior forward Jacob Moore led the Eagles in rebounds, grabbing six boards in a little over 10 minutes of action.
Central will next travel to William Penn University to take on the No. 3 nationally-ranked Statesmen on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
