Fayette, Mo. - The Central Methodist Men's Basketball team traveled to Olathe, Kansas looking to continue their undefeated start to 2025 against MidAmerica Nazarene Wednesday night.
Central was just edged by the Pioneers in the final seconds, 78-77.
With the loss, CMU now stands at 10-8 and 7-7 in the Heart, while MidAmerica improves to 8-10 and 7-7 in conference play. Both teams are now in a tie for sixth place in the Heart of America Regular Season standings.
The Eagles got off to a phenomenal start, taking an 18-4 lead in the first nine minutes of the game.
MidAmerica Nazarene made adjustments on both ends of the floor, going on a 14-1 scoring run to take a 20-19 lead with five minutes left.
MNU continued that stretch through the rest of the half, holding a 31-24 lead over Central at the intermission.
The Eagles responded in the second half and regained the lead, 49-47, with 12 minutes remaining.
After both teams exchanged leads, Central gained momentum after a three from senior guard Marcus Anthony put Central out in front 66-61.
Both teams continued to battle, with CMU holding a 73-72 lead with one minute remaining.
Anthony continued showcasing his hot hand, burrying a two-point basket with 52 seconds left.
MidAmerica would ultimately tie the game on a three with 16 seconds remaining. Central's ensuing offensive possession came up short, and the Pioneers drew a foul with 1.3 seconds left on the other end of the floor. MNU converted one-of-two free throws to go up one.
CMU's halfcourt buzzer beater would fall short, as MNU escaped with a one-point win.
Anthony led Central offensively with a game-high 22 points on eight-of-12 shooting from the floor and four three-point baskets. Additionally, the Jefferson City native added five rebounds and three assists to his statline.
Reigning Heart Defensive Player of the Week, Bol Tong, had another huge night, scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 boards for a double-double. He also picked up a pair of steals, dished out two assists and recorded a block.
Brandon Tchouya matched Tong with 17 points while adding five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Destin Jenkins was the final Eagle to land in double figures with 10 points in addition to six rebounds and two assists.
The Eagles will return home to host Grand View University Saturday, Jan. 18 at 4:00 p.m. inside Puckett Field House.
