Marshall, Mo. – The Central Methodist University men's soccer team upset 17th ranked Missouri Valley College on Saturday evening, by a final of 3-1 in Marshall, Missouri.
With the victory, Central Methodist improves to 6-2-1 overall, and 2-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. With the loss, the 17th ranked Vikings fall to 3-4-1 overall, and 0-2-1 in The Heart.
"It was a good game for us," said CMU head men's soccer coach Alex Nichols. "Missouri Valley is a very good 17th ranked team, so it was a big win to go to their place and get the win. Nor we have to get ready for a dangerous Culver-Stockton team."
The Eagles struck early and often in the first half, striking for three goals in the first 32 minutes on Saturday's match. CMU scored their first goal against the 17th ranked Vikings in the eighth minute, when Adrian Gutierrez (SO/Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) found Gui Gallucci (SR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) for the game's first goal, giving CMU the 1-0 lead.
Less than seven minutes later, Kassio Atila (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) found Jackson Darnell (SO/Perth, Western Australia, Aust) for the second goal of the match, putting the Eagles up 2-0. CMU would notch one more goal in the first half, when David Hillmann (SO/London, England) connected on a pass to Andres Manuel Chalbaud (SR/Valencia - Estado Carabobo, Ve), to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. That lead would hold into halftime.
In the second half, Missouri Valley finally got on the scoreboard, finding the back of the net just four minutes into the half. That however, would close out the scoring, and CMU would hold on for the 3-1 upset victory over 17th ranked Missouri Valley College.
Central keeper Cameron Metcalfe (SO/Durham, England), picked up the win in net. Metcalfe played all 90 minutes, while allowing just one goal and recording three saves.
The Eagles remain on the road for the next three matches, with their next game coming Wednesday at Culver-Stockton College. The match against the Wildcats is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm from Canton, Missouri, with the women's game to precede the men's match.
