Strong First Half Propels Eagles To Victory

Canton, Mo. – The Central Methodist University men's soccer team put together an early lead Wednesday evening and never looked back in their 2-1 road victory at Culver-Stockton College.

With the win, the Eagles; whom are currently receiving votes in the latest NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll, improve to 7-2-1 on the season, and 3-1 in The Heart. With the loss, Culver-Stockton falls to 4-3-3 overall and 1-2-1 in The Heart.

"We played great in the first half, but we didn't finish the way we would have liked to," said CMU head men's soccer coach Alex Nichols. "It was a great game for us to look and see our areas of success and areas that are in need of improvement."

The Eagles wasted little time on Wednesday evening, striking for the games' first goal in the seventh minute, when Connor Blitz (SO/Columbia, Mo.) found Adrian Gutierrez (SO/Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) to put CMU up 1-0.

Central would tack on one more goal before halftime, when Oliver Korngor (JR/Plainfield, N.J.) found the back of the net in the 44th minute to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage going into halftime.

Culver-Stockton got on the scoreboard in the 58th minute of the second half when John Hoemeyer found Thomas Cooper, to cut the Eagles lead to a goal at 2-1.

CMU would hold on and close out the match to win 2-1. Goalkeeper Cameron Metcalfe (SO/Durham, England) earned the win for CMU. Metcalfe played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves in the match.

The Eagles remain on the road this weekend, when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday to square off against Clarke University. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 12pm, with the women's match to follow at 2:30pm.
