Fayette, Mo. – The Central Methodist University men's soccer team struck early, and often on Sunday afternoon to defeat William Penn University by a final of 5-2 at Davis Field.
With the victory, Central Methodist; who are currently receiving votes in the latest NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll, improve to 9-2-1 overall and 5-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. CMU has now won their last five matches. With the loss, William Penn University falls to 5-6-2 overall, and 2-4-1 in The Heart.
The Eagles got on the board early on Sunday, when Kassio Atila (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) sent a corner kick into the back of the net. CMU carried their 1-0 lead the rest of the first half and into halftime.
In the second half, Central struck for three goals in the first 23 minutes of the half. Jackson Darnell (SO/Perth, Western Australia, Aust) scored the first two goals in the second half, with Andres Manuel Chalbaud (SR/Valencia - Estado Carabobo, Ve) and Joseph Oswin (FR/Bath, England) getting the assists.
Andres Manuel Chalbaud then found the back of the net in the 68th minute, when Adrian Gutierrez (SO/Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) set him up for the games' fourth goal.
William Penn responded with goals of their own in the 69th and 82nd minutes, before CMU responded once again. This time, Junior Kazeem (FR/London, England) found Gui Gallucci (SR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) for the game's final goal in the 88th minute; giving CMU the 5-2 victory.
Eagles' goaltender Cameron Metcalfe (SO/Durham, England) finished with four saves, while facing seven shots on goal.
The Eagles return to action this Wednesday, October 12th, when 9th ranked MidAmerica Nazarene University comes to town. Wednesday's match is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
