Fayette, Mo. – Liam Pescott (FR/Leicester City, England) netted a pair of second half goals; just three minutes apart from one another to send the 20th ranked Central Methodist University Eagles past the Mount Mercy Mustangs by a final of 2-0 at Davis Field on Saturday evening.
With the victory, the 20th ranked Eagles improve to 12-5-1 overall and 8-4 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. With the loss, Mount Mercy University falls to 8-9-1 overall and 4-8 in The Heart.
Saturday's contest between the Mustangs and the Eagles was a physical one. CMU and Mount Mercy combined for six cards in the match, and 32 total fouls.
With six and a half minutes remaining in the first half, Oliver Korngor (JR/Plainfield, N.J.) was given a straight red card and was forced out of the match. Following the card, CMU was forced to play the rest of the match down a man; 11 vs 10.
In the second half with the score still nodded at 0-0, the Eagles were able to break through in the 73rd minute. Adrian Gutierrez (SO/Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain) found Liam Pescott for the games' first goal. Pescott wasn't done there though, three minutes and 11 seconds later, Ricardo Olaya (JR/Bogota, Colombia) found an open Liam Pescott for yet another goal. And what was a scoreless game for 72 minutes, quickly turned and became a 2-0 lead for Central.
Even though the Eagles were down a man, they were able to hold off furious scoring attempts by the Mustangs late to claim the 2-0 lead.
Eagles' goalie Ferran Borras Marques (SO/Alicante, Spain) picked up the win between the pipes for CMU. Borras Marques recorded his first shutout of the season in his fifth appearance. He also finished with eight saves on the night.
Central begins play in the 2016 Heart of America Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Postseason Tournament this coming Saturday November 5th. The Eagles are the #4 seed in the tournament, and will host the #5 seed Missouri Valley College, with a start time still to be determined. Stay tuned to cmueagles.com all week for updates.
