Eagles Advance to Quarterfinals with 2-0 Shutout

IRVINE, Calif. - Marcos German (FR/Camarma de Esteruelas) scored the go-ahead goal on a volley from outside of the box to hoist Central Methodist to a 2-0 victory over Mid-America Christian University on Tuesday afternoon.

With tonight's win, Central Methodist advances to the quarterfinal round of the 2018 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship. Daniel Hernandez (FR/Bogota, Colombia) built on the cushion in the second half with a give and go pass from Colin Horn (SO/Koenigsbach-Stein, Germany) that nicked the goalkeeper's fingertips and landed in the lower left in the 84th minute of play.

The Eagles outshot the Evangels at a 17-6 margin, placing 6-1 on frame. Rodrigo Paredes (SO/Asuncion, Paraguay) led the offensive attack with four shots, followed by Hernandez with three. German, Horn, Victor Luengo (FR/Alcorcon Madrid, Spain), Alberto Pangrazzi (FR/Lavis (TN), Italy), Adrian Gutierrez (SR/Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain), Fabio Tarnowski (JR/Avigliana, Italy), and Andrea de Simone (JR/Genova, Italy) also registered attempts. Vince Gelei (JR/Dunakeszi, Hungary) earned the shutout in the box with one save over 90 minutes of play.

"It was the little details that helped put us in a situation to get the first goal of the game," said Central Methodist Head Coach Alex Nichols. "We're continuing to build our team that made the top 12 last year, top 20 the year before and top 30 the year before that. We're excited but there is a short turnaround so we gotta enjoy this and appreciate this very good team we played against and be ready to rock and roll for tomorrow."

Central Methodist will face Rocky Mountain on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 8:30 pm CT. The Battlin' Bears upset No. 11 seed Vanguard this evening, 1-0.
