CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The No. 1 Central Methodist men's soccer team scored twice in the first half and held on in the second half to top the always-scrappy Mount Mercy on Saturday afternoon, 2-0.

Daniel Hernandez (SO/Bogota, Colombia) gave the Eagles a lead in the 23rd minute by scoring his seventh goal of the season. Less than four minutes later, Andrea de Simone (SR/Genova, Italy) put the Eagles ahead by two by scoring off a header. Victor Luengo (SO/Madrid, Spain) was credited with the assist.

The second half was a quieter affair, as both teams combined for only three shot attempts. Over the entire 90 minutes, Central outshot the Mustangs, 14-2. The Eagles also held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 7-5.

Vince Gelei (SR/Dunakeszi, Hungary) recorded one save to earn the victory in goal.

Central will get a well-deserved rest from competition as the Eagles won't be taking the pitch again until next Saturday, Oct. 5. The Eagles will be taking on William Penn on the road at 7:30 pm.
