Dubuque, Iowa – The No. 1 Central Methodist University men's soccer team traveled to Dubuque, Iowa to face Clarke University for their fourth conference contest of the year Sunday morning. In a match dominated by the offense, the Eagles defeated Clarke by a score of 9-0.
With the win, the Eagles keep their record at a perfect 4-0 overall and in conference play. Clarke falls to 3-6 overall and 2-6 in Heart action.
The Eagles offense jumped out in front early, scoring their first goal less than four minutes into the opening half. After a throw-in from Jayton Johnson, the ball fell in the box and found Christian Sanchez Ortiz, who put the ball in the back of the net to give CMU a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Billy Nzojyibwami scored after a cross from Mark Csongradi was deflected by the Pride goalkeeper. The Eagles added their third goal after Nzojyibwami pressed the Pride defense and found Sanchez Ortiz for the score in the 14th minute.
Six minutes later, Nzojyibwami dribbled into the box and sent a cross into Mark Csongradi, who put the ball in the back of the net to push the Eagles' lead to 4-0. Nzojyibwami added CMU's fifth goal on a deflection from the goalkeeper. Isaac Johnson collected his first two goals of the year in the final 11 minutes of the first half, putting the Eagles up 7-0 at the break.
Sanchez Ortiz received a pass at the top of the box and found Jayton Johnson who fired the ball past the keeper for his first goal of the day in the opening five minutes of the second half.
The final goal came in the 74th minute when Isaac Johnson stole the ball from the Clarke defense and found Jayton Johnson for the ninth score of the day.
The Eagles finished the game with 30 shots with 22 being on goal, while Clarke recorded just four shots and one on goal. 13 different Eagles recorded at least one shot, while Sanchez Ortiz led the offense with six and five coming on frame. Nzojyibwami scored two goals and tied the single-game program record for assists with four.
Freshman goalkeeper Stefano Camerlengo played the first 45 minutes between the posts and finished with one save, followed by Harry Porritt who played all of the second half.
The Eagles will be back in action against Evangel Wednesday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Davis Field.
