Canton, Mo. – The No. 1 ranked Central Methodist men's soccer team faced Culver-Stockton Wednesday night, coming away with a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats in Canton, Mo.
Central remains undefeated, improving their record to 9-0 overall. Culver-Stockton falls to 1-7, 1-6
The Eagles scored the first goal of the match in the 39th minute of play. After a header by Rasmus Svensson that was rebounded by the keeper, the ball landed at the feet of Tom Irion who fired a shot past the keeper, giving CMU a 1-0 halftime lead.
The pace of play was slowed in the second half, as Central posted just four shots through the first 25 minutes. Just before the conclusion of the match, the Eagles added two more goals to their lead. The second goal came once again from Irion. This time the freshman defender headed the ball in after a corner kick by Marcos German, pushing CMU's lead to 2-0 Less than three minutes later, Hunter Gilliam deflected a corner kick and the ball landed at the feet of Jonathan Gibula who fired the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the year. CMU would go on to win the match, 3-0.
Central finished the match with a total of 29 shots and 13 coming on goal. Isaac Johnson, Alessandro Lacerti and Marcos German led the Eagles in shots taken with four apiece. Gilliam followed with three shots, all coming on goal. Gilliam also recorded an assist as did German. Irion recorded three shots with two finding the back of the net, pushing his total number of goals scored to seven to lead the team.
Harry Porritt played all 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles and recorded one save.
CMU will be back on Davis Field to face Heart newcomer Park University on Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 p.m.
