Des Moines, Iowa – The No.1 ranked Central Methodist men's soccer team defeated Heart foe Grand View University by a score of 2-0, Wednesday night in Des Moines Iowa.
CMU improves their record to a perfect 11-0 overall, while the Vikings finish the fall season with a 6-6-1 record.
The first half was very balanced between both squads, each with several solid offensive attacks. In the 16th minute of the game, a handball against the Vikings inside the box gave the Eagles a chance to open the scoring on a penalty kick. Junior defender Marcos German converted the PK to put Eagles up 1-0, which was the score heading into halftime.
Both Central and Grand View finished the first half with nine shots and seven on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Stefano Camerlengo finished the first 45 minutes with seven saves.
The second half was similar to the first, as both teams had several scoring opportunities. CMU found the back of the net successfully in the 61st minute. Billy Nzojiybwami found Niels Zachariat who fired the ball into the upper left corner of the goal, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. That would prove to be the final score, as Central went on to earn their 11th win of the year.
The Eagles finished the game with 16 shots and 13 being on frame. Isaac Johnson led the Eagles with three shots and two on goal. Carlos Scheckermann, Jayton Johnson, German, and Christian Sanchez followed closely behind with two shots. Nzojyibwami finished with one shot, one on goal, and one score.
Camerlengo earned his ninth win of the year, starting all 90 minutes between the posts for Central.
The Eagles will back on Davis Field for their final matchup of the 2020 fall season, facing Mount Mercy Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2:00 p.m.
