Fayette, Mo. – The No. 1 ranked Central Methodist men's soccer team wrapped up the 2020 fall season with a 2-1 come from behind win over Mount Mercy Sunday afternoon at Davis field.
The Eagles finish the 2020 regular season with a perfect record of 12-0, while the Mustangs fall to a 3-6-2, 3-5-2.
The first half was played mostly in the midfield by both teams, but the first goal of the game came from the Mustangs in the 23rd minute of the match, and Mount Mercy held a 1-0 lead at the break.
Central finished the first half with 11 shots with three coming on frame.
CMU began the second half with a quicker pace and netted the equalizer just three minutes into the second half. Marcos German found Carlos Scheckermann in the box, and Scheckermann headed the ball into the back of the net to bring the Eagles even with Mount Mercy at 1-1.
The game-winning goal came from freshman defender Tom Irion in the 85th minute, courtesy of an assist via a corner kick from Guzman Perry. CMU would go on to close out the match for their 12th win of the season.
The Eagles finished the game with 22 shots with 11 being on frame. Christian Sanchez led the team with five shots with four on goal. Irion followed with four shots, two on frame, with one finding the back of the net. Freshman goalkeeper Stefano Camerlengo played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves, earning his 10th win of the season.
Today's match marked the final contest for Guzman Pery, who will graduate in December. The Madrid, Spain native wraps up his career as an Eagle with 75 games played, eight goals scored, and 31 assists. This season, Pery recorded one goal and seven assists in 10 games played. He finishes the fall as the team and conference leader in assists.
CMU heads into the Heart conference tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and will host the quarterfinals beginning on April 10, 2021.
