Fayette, Mo. - The No. 1 Central Methodist men's soccer team defeated No. 22 Mid-America Christian by a score of 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Davis Field. With the win, CMU improves to a 13-1 overall while MACU falls to a 10-2 overall.
The first goal of the game for the Eagles came after Jayton Johnson stole the ball from anEvangel defender and found Markus Esko, who scored his first career goal as an Eagle. Mid-America Christian answered fast, as less than five minutes later, Mason Gonzalez tied the game. Despite many chances and neither team was able to add another goal before going into halftime.
Central finished the half with five shots and three on goal while Mid-America had six with three coming on target.
The Eagles picked up the pace in the second half and in the 55th minute, Clayton Duarte shot the ball past the keeper after a corner kick by Marcos German was headed in the box by Carlos Scheckemann. A throw in from Jayton Johnson put the ball in the box, and Christian Sanchez was able to get the on the end of it to extend the Eagles' lead to 3-1 with 30 minutes left in regulation. CMU controlled the game after their third goal earning their 13th win of the season.
Tom Irion led the team in shots with three and one being on target. Sanchez and Duarte had two shots with one finding the back of the net each. Carlos Scheckermann, Jayton Johnson, German and Esko each finished with one shot. Scheckermann also added one assist.
Stefano Camerlengo had one save in 90 minutes of action. CMU's defense kept the MACU to only six shots in the game, all of those in the first half.
The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m. for a matchup against NCAA Division I member University of Missouri – Kansas City in Kansas City, Mo.
