Men's Soccer announces farewell of longtime assistant coach David Macsicza; hiring of Eli Sherman

Fayette, Mo. - The Central Methodist men's soccer program is announcing the farewell of longtime assistant coach David Macsicza and the hiring of Eli Sherman.

"It is very tough losing an assistant like David," said Head Coach Alex Nichols. "He gave so much to CMU over his five years here and was one of the best in college soccer. We are going to miss him. His selfless efforts for our program are a huge reason for our success over these past years. We simply cannot describe the amount of time, energy, and passion he gave to both our first and reserve teams. I wish Dave the best in his future endeavors in Slovakia and know he will have great success!"

Macsicza served as the head assistant for four seasons and five seasons overall with the men's soccer program. This past season, he helped lead a young squad to a sweep of the conference regular season and tournament championships for the second consecutive year and its third-straight appearance at the NAIA National Championship Final Site in Columbus County, Ga.

In both 2018 and 2019, the Eagles won NAIA National Championships. Macsicza was part of a coaching staff that was tabbed as the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaching Staff of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches Association both of those championship seasons.

In 2019, along with their second consecutive national championship, CMU boasted an overall record of 25-1, the most wins in school history. Overall, Macsicza coached 11 NAIA All-Americans during his time in Fayette with a final record of 93-14-4.

Macsicza 's role will be filled by former Westminster Volunteer Assistant Eli Sherman."Eli is a very bright young coach who we are excited to have on board," said Coach Nichols. "I coached him many years ago and know his work rate. We worked to hire someone who is a special up-and-coming coach and are excited about what Eli will bring to our program."

Sherman played two seasons at Westminster College in nearby Fulton, Mo from 2015-2016. He appeared in 33 games with 30 starts, scoring 10 goals and tallying four assists. As a junior, he was named a First-team All-SLIAC selection, recording eight goals and three assists in 19 starts.

Sherman was also tabbed as an SLIAC All-Academic performer for his work in the classroom in 2016. Overall in his two seasons in Fulton, he led the Blue jays to a 32-7-1 record, a SLIAC regular season championship, two conference tournament titles and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III National Championship.

After graduation, he served as a volunteer assistant for four seasons with the Blue jays, helping the Blue jays to 26 wins including an 8-5-1 record in 2020.
