LAMONI, Iowa - Central Methodist saw its seven-game regular-season win streak over Graceland (Iowa) snapped with a 90-75 loss Thursday. The Eagles suffered their first loss in the Closson Center since the 2010-11 season and will play in the first round�of the newly-expanded HAAC Tournament that will include all 10 teams.
A 6-0 run in a little more than a minute gave Central Methodist (14-13, 5-12) a 32-25 lead with 9:05 left in the first half, but Graceland (10-15, 7-10) responded with a 12-0 spurt in less than four minutes.
A Jesse Ellis bucket with 15 second on the clock gave the Eagles a 45-42 edge at the break.�The Yellowjackets trailed by five with 17:59 to play but answered with a 15-2 run to take a 59-51 lead. Leading by seven with 9:33 to go, Graceland scored 10-straight points over the next 4:19 to put the game out of reach.
Five Graceland players scored in double figures, led by Sydney Vaughn's 20 points. Vaughn also added eight rebounds and four assists, while Yvette Bennett tallied 16 points. Kiara Cain posted 14 points and eight assists. Jaynelle Johnson recorded 13 points, and Gabrielle Lapinski delivered 12 points and seven rebounds. �
Taylor Cornelison led the way for Central Methodist with 15 points and five rebounds, while Ellis tallied 12 points, six rebounds and two assists. Taylor McDowell had 11 points, while Chelsea Pannier had eight points and six rebounds.�
Central Methodist closes out the regular season Saturday with Senior Day against Peru State (Neb.). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CT.
