Baldwin City, Kan. – The No. 7 CMU Women's Soccer team traveled to Baldwin City, Kansas, for a hard-fought contest against the Baker University Wildcats, securing a 2-1 victory.
The Eagles struck early when junior midfielder Minori Saze opened the scoring just four minutes into the match. The midfielder had an impressive performance, registering five shots, of which three were on target.
Despite attempts to build offensive momentum, the Wildcats failed to produce a shot in the first half. Central on the other hand, tested Baker's freshman goalkeeper Avery Young with seven shots, four of them on target.
After halftime, the Wildcats quickly responded, leveling the match when Lydia Brinker scored her second goal of the season nine minutes into the half.
For the next 20 minutes, both teams exchanged opportunities, but it was sophomore Mariana Barreto, assisted by Paula Castro and Abigail Crispell, who found the back of the net, giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage with 15 minutes remaining.
In a final push, the Wildcats pressed for an equalizer, but the Eagles' defense held firm, securing their third road victory of the season.
Central's first-year goalkeeper, Madison Priebe, had a fairly relaxing afternoon, recording just one save, as the Wildcats managed only two shots on target.
The Eagles finished the match with 15 total shots and seven on goal. Kirstine Lykke and Barreto had two shots on goal each while Saze tallied the other three.
With the win, Central improves to 8-1-1 including 3-1 mark in conference play. They will return to Davis Field on Wednesday, Oct. 2, to face Park at 5:00 p.m.
