After dropping the first set 13-25, Central Methodist controlled throughout the second set. The Lady Eagles took a 23-19 lead late in the set, but a pair of errors brought Benedictine to within 23-21. A kill by freshman Alexandra Slaton (Reeds Spring, Mo.) and a block by senior Taylor Reed (Toledo, Ohio) finished the set, giving CMU a 25-21 win to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Benedictine took a 10-5 lead before CMU rallied to make it 7-10. The Ravens scored three straight points to extend their lead to 13-7, and later made it 19-13. A block by sophomore Makenzie Shepard (Leavenworth, Kan.) and a kill by freshman Dana Peters (Waverly, Mo.) brought CMU to within 15-19. With Benedictine leading 22-17, Peters got another kill to make it 22-18, but the Ravens scored the final three points to earn the 25-18 win in the third set.
Benedictine dominated the fourth set to win the match. A kill by junior Sarah Lewey (Kansas City, Mo.) made the score 8-6 in favor of the Ravens early in the set. Benedictine then went on a 5-0 run to open up a 13-6 lead. Later in the set, a Raven error brought CMU to within 16-9, but Benedictine scored outscored CMU 14-1 from that point to cruise to the 25-11 win in the final set.
Reed led CMU with 12 kills, while Peters and Shepard added six each. Lewey finished with 25 assists. Senior Melanie Touchette (Millstadt, Ill.) recorded a team-high eight digs, and also had a season-best four ace serves in the match.
Central Methodist dropped to 4-14 on the season and 1-5 in the HAAC with the loss, while Benedictine improved to 8-14 and 3-1 in conference play. The Lady Eagles will be looking for their second HAAC win of the season Saturday when they host Peru State College in a 2 p.m. match at Puckett Field House.
