CMU throws block party in 3-1 win




FAYETTE, Mo. - Central Methodist's Block Out Breast Cancer Night on Tuesday turned into a block party inside Puckett Field House.

The Green and Black totaled 11 blocks, including 18 block assists, in a 3-1 victory over Avila (Mo.) in Heart of America Athletic Conference action by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-27 and 25-21.

Back-to-back service aces by Lindsay Smith gave Central Methodist (11-16, 2-5) an early 5-1 lead in set one. Central Methodist's advantage swelled to 11-4 following an attack error by Olivia Stine. Avila (5-21, 0-7) cut the deficit to 12-11 after consecutive kills by McKenna Judge, but the visitors would get no closer, as the Green and Black closed the game on a 13-5 run, ending with a Katelyn Waddell service ace.

A Jordan Jackson kill broke a 13-all tie in set two and gave Central Methodist the upper hand for good. Leading 16-15, the Green and Black went on a 7-1 run, with four points coming off Madison Bond and Smith kills. A Bond and Jackson block of an attack by Danielle Kaullen ended set two in Central Methodist's favor.



Avila jumped out to an 11-3 lead in game three, which ended with a kill by Laurel Dehn. Trailing 19-11, Central Methodist tried to rally, cutting the deficit to 22-21 after a Darcy Latham kill. An attack error by Jessica Aldrich, including a block by Latham and Ali Schmucker, tied the match at 25, but kills by Stine and Dehn gave Avila the third-set victory.

Central Methodist exploded offensively in set four to put the match away, scoring the first six points. A Julia Weber kill made the score 11-4 in favor of the home team. Central Methodist increased its lead to 11 points, 18-7, following a kill by Jackson. Avila attempted a comeback with a 14-6 run, but a Bond kill ended the match and the threat.

Jackson ended with 13 kills, while Bond posted a career-high 12 to go along with a team-high seven block assists. Bond hit .579 in the win, while Jackson posted a .367 clip. Jackson and Dana Peters each had three block assists. Smith ended the night with nine kills, 14 digs and three of the squad's seven service aces. Melody Hanson poured in a double-double with 13 digs and 28 assists. Andrea Lopez had 25 digs, while Latham had 15. Waddell netted eight digs, 15 assists and two service aces.�

Stine had 10 kills in the loss. Paige Dosch had a double-double with 11 digs and 22 assists.

Central Methodist hosts Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11:30 a.m. CT.
