CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Central Methodist volleyball team took on Mount Mercy University in the Heart of America Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon, picking up the win over the host, 3-2.
NOTES
• The Eagles defeated Mt. Mercy winning the second, third, and fifth set; 25-19, 25-20, 25-14, 25-23, and 15-11.
• The Eagles are 13-9 in the 2017 season and 7-4 in the Heart, while Mt. Mercy drops to 10-11 on the year and 5-7 in the Heart.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Destiny Vaden (SO/Lee's Summit, Mo.) highlighted the Eagles' attack with career high 15 kills. Madison Bond (SR/Jefferson City, Mo.) contributed 12 kills and five blocks in the match. Petra Schaffer (SO/Carinthia, Austria) chipped in eight kills with five blocks in the contest.
• Darcy Latham (SR/Bismark, Mo.) led the Eagles defensively with 17 digs, while Shannon Peters (FR/Waverly, Mo.) set up her teams for 49 assists in the match.
• Olivia Coe paced the Mustangs with 13 digs along with Lauren Stopko tallying 21 digs and Kayla Daggett with 42 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Mt. Mercy was able to control the first set after taking the lead off a kill by Tallman. Central Methodist was able to pull within three points from a kill by Bond that was assisted by Peters 15-12. With a four-point lead, Mt. Mercy closed out the set on a kill by Thomson for the 25-19 win.
• Central Methodist would use a pair of four unanswered points to take an early lead in the second set. Mt. Mercy pulled within one point as Daggett set up Thomson for a kill 19-18. However, Central Methodist stretched the lead out on kills by Limback and Vaden. Finished off with Schaffer nailing a kill to give the Eagles the second set win 25-20.
• Similar to the second set, Central Methodist put together multiple runs to extend its lead to nine points. Vaden and Limback came up huge with two service aces a piece in the set. Mt. Mercy would commit an attack error to give Central Methodist the third set victory 25-14.
• Mt. Mercy would take the opening point of the fourth set, but neither team was able take control of the lead until Bell sparked a 6-2 run for Mt. Mercy 13-7. Central Methodist managed to tie up the set at 20-20, but it wasn't enough as Mt. Mercy pulled away to take the set win 25-23.
• The final set was dominated by Central Methodist from start, jumping out to a quick 6-2 lead. Vaden would have four kills in a row, capped off with a service ace to carry Central Methodist to a 15-11 set win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Eagles edged out the Mustangs with 57 kills compared to 55 kills from the Mustangs.
• The Eagles would nail 13 service aces compared to the three service aces by the Mustangs.
• Mt. Mercy had the advantage in digs with 79-77.

• The Eagles will return to action on Monday, October 9th when they travel to face Culver-Stockton in the Heart of America Athletic Conference action in Canton, Missouri at 7:00pm .
