SIOUX CITY, Iowa – In its final match of the season, the Central Methodist volleyball team won with ease, never trailing in a 3-0 sweep of Oklahoma City University on Thursday morning.
The victory moved the Eagles to 1-2 in Pool F action, but they will not move on to the Round of 16 since both Eastern Oregon and Lindsey Wilson entered Thursday's action with two wins.
In the first set, Central Methodist raced out to a 14-3 lead before the Stars called a timeout. It didn't change much, as the Eagles rolled to a 25-9 victory.
In the second set, it was more of the same for the Eagles, who jumped out to an 18-6 lead. Oklahoma City eventually cut the deficit to seven, but never got any closer as Central Methodist took the set, 25-15.
The sweep was concluded with a 25-17 third set victory for Central Methodist.
Grace Stumbaugh (SO/Concordia, Mo.) played a spectacular game, smashing 10 kills with zero errors to hit a season-high .625. She also pitched in eight blocks for good measure.
Jane Kickham (JR/Springfield, Mo.) had nine kills and 12 digs. Viviane Viana (JR/Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil) had six kills, five blocks and 10 digs. Shannon Peters (SO/Waverly, Mo.) had 21 assists and 12 digs for a double-double.
For the seniors, the match marked their final time putting on a Central Methodist uniform. Marija Janjusevic (SR/Belgrade, Serbia), Alma Flores (SR/Tijuana, Mexico), Stevie Sherard (SR/Leavenworth, Kan.) and Sabrina Beach (SR/Grass Valley, Calif.) shined in their final performance. Janjusevic had six kills, Flores had 11 digs and Beach kept Oklahoma City on its heels with a service ace. Sherard had 11 assists and nine digs.
Central Methodist ends its season with a 32-8 record, a Heart of America Athletic Conference South Division Championship, and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. This group of Eagles also earned the first victories at the NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship in program history.
