Fayette, Mo. - The Central Methodist Volleyball program fell in its first match of conference play with a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Grand View University Friday night inside Puckett Field House.
Central drops to 8-3 and 0-1 in the Heart, while the Vikings improve to 12-1 and 1-0 in conference action.
Grand View came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set, hitting a staggering .652 to cruise to a 25-11 win in set one.
Trailing by double-digits, Central scored five straight points to trim the set two deficit to 24-18. However, Vitoria Campos Mello shut the door with one of her 14 total kills on the night, giving Grand View a 2-0 set lead.
Central's best set came in the third, as the Eagles jumped out to a 14-8 lead. However, Grand battled back and rattled off six consecutive points to tie the match at 14-14.
Both sides remained deadlocked through the next eight points at 18-18, until the Vikings scored three straight points to take a 21-18 lead. The Eagles answered right back with three consecutive points to tie the set at 21-21.
GVU responded, scoring three of its next four points on kills to come away with a 25-22 win in the third.
Gimena Dezeo led the Eagles' offense with 10 kills on 21 swings for a .381 attack percentage. Mariah Bostic-Jones finished the night with 12 assists, while Ramsey Spinks dished out 10.
Vitoria Martins led the defense with 14 digs while Joana Milho added eight and Bostic-Jones six.
Central remains at home to host William Penn University Saturday, Sept. 13 at 12:00 p.m. inside Puckett Field House.
