Fayette, Mo. - On a historic afternoon, the Central Methodist women's wrestling program hosted the inaugural Heart of America Athletic Conference Women's Wrestling Championship Saturday morning inside Puckett Fieldhouse.
The day featured nearly 50 wrestlers from six different Heart istitutions including; Baker, CMU, Grand View, Missouri Valley College, Waldorf and William Penn.
"It was a great moment in women's collegiate wrestling and the NAIA to be able to host the very first Heart Conference Championships here at CMU," said head coach Brieana Delgado.
"With Central being only a second year program, I believe this is just a stepping stone for the Heart to build a stronger and competitive conference in the future. In turn, this is phenomenal to continue to build women's wrestling across the region."
The Eagles finished sixth in the team standings, scoring 12 points. Grand View claimed the first-ever women's wrestling championship with 100 team points. Baker followed closely behind with a second place finish with 96 points while Missouri Valley College earned a third-place spot in the standings with 59.5 team points.
Rounding out the Top-5 included William Penn (43.5) and Waldorf (27).
Sophomore grappler Giovanna Loza earned a third place finish in the 123-pound weight class, posting a 1-1 record in the bracket and becoming the first Eagle in program history to land on the podium at a conference championship event.
Savannah Kiddoo, Da'Viona Bonner, and Yahaira Vargas all earned fourth place finishes for the Eagles. Cora Johnson, Andrea Montoya, Aliyah Ashby, and Rachel Rodawald also competed for Central.
CMU will conclude 2021 with the NAIA National Invitational March 12-13 in Jamestown, North Dakota.
