Iowa City, Iowa - The Central Methodist indoor track and field programs to part in the Larry Wieczorek Invitational, held this weekend at the University of Iowa.
Central Competed against a strong field that included a number of NCAA Division I, junior college, and NAIA programs.
Senior Wilton George highlighted the men's sprint and hurdle efforts, qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles before placing sixth overall with a time of 8.05 seconds. It is a new personal best that ranks No. 4 in the NAIA. George also advanced in the 60-meter dash prelims, clocking a time of 6.91 seconds.
Freshman Isaac Lawson continued his strong debut season for the Eagles, finishing second in the men's 200 meters (22.04) and placing fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.72. Tyrone Summerall added a third-place finish in the men's 600 meters (1:22.86).
On the women's side, senior Zakiya Porter led the way with a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter final (7.66) after qualifying in the prelims. Porter also competed in the 200, posting a season-best 25.21 seconds.
Haley Bellamy ran an 8.82 in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, setting a personal best and ranking No. 13 in the NAIA. Bellamy also placed fifth in the long jump (5.57m), while Annemarie Koerner finished fourth with a personal-best 5.62m, ranking No. 17 nationally and punching her ticket to the NAIA National Championships.
Middle-distance success came from seniors Allena Rowland and Diane Ondobo, who finished third (1:34.03) and seventh (1:37.19) respectively in the 600 meters. Rowland's performance marked a personal best and now ranks No. 4 in the NAIA.
The weekend concluded with a headline performance from the women's 4x400-meter relay, as the squad of Ondobo, Rowland, Aroa Carballo, and Bailey Arceneaux placed third overall in 3:48.17. That time is now the fastest time in the NAIA this season.
Central will continue indoor action at the Principia Relays beginning Friday, Jan. 30 in Elsah, Illinois.
