FAYETTE, Mo.
– Trailing Benedictine College 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning in a key Heart of America Athletic Conference contest Sunday afternoon at Cox Field, the 20th-ranked Central Methodist University softball team needed someone to step up with a key hit. They received just that when Hannah Steeby (FR/St. Joseph, Mo.) hit one of her two doubles in the game, driving home Hannah Blackmon (SR/Beaumont, Texas) and Sydnie Harmon (SO/Raymore, Mo.) as CMU posted a 2-1 win and a split with Benedictine College in the home-opening doubleheader. The Ravens captured Game 1, 10-4.

The Eagles' split of the league twinbill kept their Heart record even at 2-2, while posting an 11-7-1 season mark. Benedictine ended the day at 11-8, 3-3 in conference play.

Steeby, the Eagles' shortstop, posted a 2-for-3 effort in Game 2. Skyler Hime (SO/Raymore, Mo.) added a double of her own, in three at-bats. Blackmon and Alyssa Lilly (SR/Wentzville, Mo.) both had doubles in Game 1.

Central Methodist pitcher Alexis Kohrs (SR/Tilden, Ill.) evened her season mark at 4-4 in the circle as she hurled the two-hitter in Game 2. She gave up one run, while fanning nine and walking only one in seven innings of work.

CMU outhit the Ravens 6-2 in the contest. In addition to Steeby and Hime's two-baggers, Bailey Fidler (SO/Pleasant Hill, Mo.), Hannah Blackmon and Alyssa Lilly added singles.

Alex Gilham (3-4) was the losing pitcher for Benedictine. In six innings she gave up two runs on six hits, with six strikeouts and a walk.

Lindsey Profit led the Ravens' offense with a 2-for-3 effort, driving in the only BC run.

In Game 1, Lilly and Sydnie Harmon each had a pair of hits for the Eagles in CMU's 10-4 setback. Bailey Fidler went 1-for-2 with a RBI and a walk, Blackmon had a 1-for-2 effort, with a two-bagger, a pair of walks, two runs scored and another driven in.

Benedictine outhit the Eagles in the opener, 12-6, building a 6-0 lead through 2.5 innings, before Central Methodist scored two in the bottom of the second to pull to within 6-2. The Ravens added two runs in the fourth and the Eagles bounced back with a pair in the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-4. But that was as close as CMU would come.

Five different BC players posted two hits in the game, led by Molly Chevalier's 2-for-3 effort, with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Nikki McNeil (8-3) was the winning pitcher for the Ravens. In seven innings she allowed four runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and five walks.

Erin Enke (JR/Martinez, Calif.) (4-3) was the losing hurler for CMU. She allowed two earned runs (7 total) on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in three innings. Ashley Litton (SR/Lee's Summit, Mo.) pitched the other four frames for Central Methodist. She gave up three runs on five hits with three walks.

WHAT'S UP NEXT FOR CMU?
Central Methodist will attempt to improve its Heart record over the .500 mark on Tuesday afternoon when the Eagles host Missouri Valley College in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. at Cox Field.
