Central begins final homestand with doubleheader sweep of Pioneers

Fayette, Mo. - The No. 5 Central Methodist softball team earned another doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon, defeating Heart foe MidAmerica Nazarene by scores of 5-3 and 8-0 at Cox Softball Complex in Fayette, Mo.

With the pair of wins, CMU improves its overall record to 44-5 and 30-4 in the Heart. MNU falls to 17-17 and 15-13 in conference play. The 30 conference wins are the most for Central since the league expanded to 14 teams in 2017.

The Pioneers jumped out in front in the first game, scoring two runs in the opening inning. CMU responded with a run in the bottom of the first courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Madison White. Despite MNU adding an additional run in the third, Central scored a run in the next half inning and run in the fifth to tie the game.

Both teams remained even at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Madison White led off with a single to center and Micaela Harcrow hit a two-run home run on a 1-1 count to centerfield to put CMU out in front 5-3. The Eagles held on in the seventh to pick up the narrow two-run win.

Kelli Gorman led the bats batting a perfect three-for-three including an RBI double. White and Harcrow each picked up a hit including the game-winning home run for Harcrow in the sixth.

Keighlan Cronin picked up another win, posting her 22nd victory of the year. The junior tossed a complete game, giving up only one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts.

The offense carried the momentum into game two, scoring three runs in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Gorman put the finishing touches on the 8-0 win, as the senior outfielder hit her nation-leading 18th home run of the season over the right-field fence.

Harcrow led the offense in game two batting three-of-four including an RBI single and a run scored. Gorman drove in three runners including a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Madison Love, Adalia Sewell, and Jordan Jenkins each drove in a runner, and White drew a pair of walks. Love earned another win as the game two starter, throwing a complete game and allowing no runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Central continues their homestand with a doubleheader against Evangel on Saturday, May 1 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Cox Softball Complex.
