Canton, Mo. - The No. 11 Central Methodist softball team scored a combined 37 runs in a two-game sweep of Culver-Stockton Saturday afternoon in Canton, Mo.
With the sweep, Central improves its standing to 21-4 and 13-1 in the conference. The Wildcats fall to 13-11 and 9-11 in Heart action.
CMU began the day with a 12-2 victory in five innings in game two. After scoring a run in the opening inning, the Eagles scored eight runs in the second followed by a run in each of the final three innings to earn a 12-2 victory.
Overall, Central scored 12 runs on 12 hits and three Culver-Stockton miscues. Senior outfielder Kelli Gorman led the Eagle bats, batting a perfect three-for-three with an RBI-double in the first inning. Kaylee Parker and Katelyn Kiser each collected two hits, highlighted by a solo home run and a bases clearing double for Parker.
Mikayla Pennell and Madison Love each drove in two runners while Pennell drew two walks. Keighlan Cronin earned her 10th win of the year in the circle, tossing all five innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits with two walks and eight K's.
Central then rolled to a 25-2 victory in game two to earn the doubleheader sweep. The 25 runs from CMU are the most this season, and the most since Central defeated Louisiana Christian, 22-2 as part of the Gulf Shores Invitational on March 4.
The Eagles opened the game scoring four runs in the first and eight in the second. Culver-Stockton plated two runs in the bottom half of the second, before Central added three runs in the third and 10 in the fourth to earn the 23-run win.
Gorman once again batted a perfect three-for-three including a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Kiser matched Gorman with three hits in four at-bats and three runners driven in. The duo also crossed the plate on three different occassions.
Madison White, Love, Lauren Hill and Cronin all drove in two runners with Cronin recording her first career hit in an Eagle uniform on a double down the right field line in the fourth.
Senior infielder Macey Harrington highlighted the game two win with a grand slam in the fourth inning. Mykala Johnico earned her eighth win of the year, giving up two earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Abbie Neally came in relief for the final inning, retiring the side in order.
Central will travel to Springfield, Mo. to face Evangel in a rescheduled doubleheader on Monday, April 11 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
