Central Fends off Vikings for Second Straight Heart Tournament Win

Central Fends off Vikings for Second Straight Heart Tournament Win

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Central Methodist Softball team continues its run in the Heart of America Conference Tournament with a 5-2 win over Grand View University Friday evening in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

With the win Central punches its ticket to the Heart Semifinals and improves its overall record to 45-3. Central has now won 28 consecutive games, tying their longest win streak in the last 17 years.

The Eagles plated their first run of the game on an RBI single from Kelena Oots to score Lauren Hill in the second inning. An RBI double from the Vikings in the fourth tied the game at 1-1.

Central countered with four runs on two hits in the bottom half of the frame. Kaysie Jolley put CMU out in front with an RBI double that scored Cassidy Brent

Following a walk from Elizabeth Palumbo to load the bases, a wild pitch from the Grand View pitcher allowed Oots to score easily from third. Madison White would then fly out right field, securing a sacrifice fly that scored Jolley.

A walk from Joely Crider loaded the bases again and brought Madison Roberts to the dish. The sophomore hit a well hit ball to the infield which scored Palumbo to five CMU a 5-1 lead.

The Vikings trimmed the deficit to three with an RBI single to centerfield in the seventh. But senior Haile Farris battled through a bases loaded jam with two outs, striking out the final batter to secure a 5-2 win for CMU.

Farris earned her 17th win of the year, throwing a complete game and allowed two earned runs on six hits. She also struck out nine batters.

As a team, Central plated five runs on seven hits, with Jolley and Oots leading the way with two hits apiece. White and Crider also each drew a pair of walks.

Central will face the winners of Benedictine/Missouri Valley in the semifinals at 5:00 p.m. Saturday night. With a win, the Eagles would punch their ticket to their third consecutive Heart Tournament Championship game.
