Munoz's Last Second Goal Clinches Upset Win over No. 13 MNU

Munoz's Last Second Goal Clinches Upset Win over No. 13 MNU

Olathe, Kan. - The Heart Game of the Week turned into a thrilling finish between No. 21 CMU and No. 13 MidAmerica Nazarene Wednesday afternoon in Olathe, Kansas.

In a rematch of last year's Heart Tournament Championship game, the Eagles got revenge, coming away with a 2-1 victory on a last second goal.

Central improves to 4-1-1 and 2-0 in the Heart of America, while the Pioneers fall to 3-2 and 1-1 in conference action.

The first goal of the top 25 showdown didn't come until the 42nd minute. Central earned a corner kick, which was taken by freshman defender Laura Andres

Andres sent the ball into the box which was then headed in by junior Nerea Munoz, giving CMU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Up until the goal from Munoz, MNU had controlled possession, outshooting Central 8-2 in the first half.

CMU picked up the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Pioneers 10-6. It appeared that Central would escape with a 1-0 win until the closing minutes of the match.

With 41 seconds remaining in the second half, Central committed a foul just outside the box. MNU earned a freekick, and converted to tie the match at 1-1.

However, the Eagles had one final offensive push in the final third. With three seconds left, Central was fouled just outside the box and had one opportunity at a game winner.

From almost the exact spot where MNU converted their free kick moments earlier, Munoz had the chance for the game winner. The native of Madrid, Spain struck the ball with her right foot which went over the MNU wall and found the upper left corner of the net for the score, giving CMU a thrilling victory.

The Pioneers held a slight shot advantage over Central at 14-12. Both sides were even in corner kicks at five each.

Amber Bennett earned her fourth win of the year in between the posts, making four saves in a full 90 minutes.

The Eagles remain on the road and will travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa to play William Penn University Saturday, August 13 at 11:00 a.m.
