No. 18 CMU Secures 2-2 Draw Against No. 6 Missouri Valley at Home

No. 18 CMU Secures 2-2 Draw Against No. 6 Missouri Valley at Home

Fayette, Mo. - The No. 18 Central Methodist Women's Soccer program secured a 2-2 draw against No. 6 Missouri Valley College Wednesday night at Davis Field.

The Eagles now stand at 5-1-2 and 3-0-1 in the Heart of America, while MVC stands at 4-0-3 and 2-0-1 in conference action.

Missouri Valley struck first with a goal in the 14th minute of play, after chipping a ball over the keeper's reach for the score. The Vikings continued to control possession, until key adjustments by CMU turned the tide.

Mariana Barreto was fouled inside the box and earned a penalty kick in the 30th minute. The junior struck the ball past the keeper to the right side of the goal, tying the match at 1-1.

Less than nine minutes later, Central earned a free kick 50 yards from the goal. Reigning Heart Player of the Week Nerea Munoz sailed the shot over the keeper's head for the go ahead score. It marked the junior's third goal in the last three matches.

Central would hold a 2-1 lead at the halftime break.

Missouri Valley battled back in the second half, pressuring the Eagles' defense for the duration of the final 45. The Vikings fired off 12 shots in the second half, finding the equalizer with less than three minutes remaining off a deflected free kick.

Neither side was able to score the go-ahead goal in the waning moments, as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Missouri Valley outshot the Eagles 20-8 for the match and 11-3 in shots on goal.

CMU freshman goalkeeper Amber Bennett settled in after the opening goal and made a career-high nine saves in the draw.

The Eagles will hit the road for a matchup against Clarke University Saturday, Sept 20 at 1:00 p.m. in Dubuque, Iowa.
