Baldwin City, Kan. - The Central Methodist track and field programs continued the outdoor season with a trip to Baldwin City, Kan. to compete in the Baker Relays hosted by fellow Heart member Baker University Saturday.
For the women, freshman sprinter Kailey Johnson claimed victory in the 100m hurdles in a time of 15.04. She also finished second in the 100m dash with a final time of 12.42. The 4x100m relay team of Johnson, Jada Gaines, Mason Fitzgerald, and Dyana Montenegro won the event in 48.91 out of five competing teams in the final. In addition, the 4x400 team won the finals in a time of 4:03.84.
Montenegro claimed a Top-2 finish in the 400m dash with a season's best at 58.86, just 0.37 from the top spot. Junior Antoinette Flowers finished third in the 200m dash in a time of 26.54.
Kaitlyn Weber had an impressive day in the jumps, finishing third in the triple with a final mark of 11.12 meters. She also set a new PR in the long jump (5.57m). Freshman Amara Reichert posted a season's best of 3.05 meters, good enough for a second-place standing in the pole vault.
Fellow freshman Antonia Randle posted a second-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.52 meters.
In addition to the Baker Relays, senior runner Lisa Sauter hit the 'A' standard in the half-marathon Saturday morning in a time of 1:25.22 to qualify for the national championships.
On the men's side, Mohammed Nyaoga made his outdoor debut in the 400m dash, taking the top spot with a final time of 49.40. He was also part of the 4x400m relay team of Hayden Hackman, Spencer Campeau, and Nehemiah Colyer that finished second in 3:18.74. The 4x400 team currently boasts the third-fastest time in the country.
Senior Taylor Bottomley qualified for the national meet by hitting the 'A' standard in the hammer throw with a final mark of 53.00 meters, good enough for a fourth-place finish. He also placed fifth in the discus with a mark of 43.89 meters.
The duo of Colyer and Alexander Ayala finished 2-3 in the 400m hurdles with times of 55.69 and 55.80 respectively. Junior distance runner Shawn Kiptoo nearly won the men's 5000m run in 15:52.23, finishing in second place behind Liam Barnsby of Baker.
The Eagles return home to host the 2021 CMU Invite April 2-3 at Davis Field.
