CMU women place second at Heart Outdoor Championships

CMU women place second at Heart Outdoor Championships

Oskaloosa, Iowa - The Central Methodist women's outdoor track and field program finished as runner-up in the 2022 Heart of America Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. 

The championships, which featured 13 schools from around the Heart, were hosted by William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa Friday and Saturday. 

CMU scored 149.5 team points to place second, while Grand View won the event with 163 total points. Benedictine finished third with 125 points. 

Individually, the top three finishers in each event are considered All-Conference athletes.

  • First Place = First Team All-Conference
  • Second Place = Second Team All-Conference
  • Third Place = Third Team All-Conference
  • Fourth, fifth and sixth place finishers in each event = Honorable Mention All-Conference

Senior Jada Gaines posted a third-place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 12.19 seconds. The duo of Megan Aubuchon and Kailey Johnson finished 2-3 in the 100m hurdles with times of 14.70 and 14.89 seconds respectively. 

Dayana Montenegro was crowned conference champion in the 400m dash with a time of 57.10 seconds, good enough to hit the national qualifying 'B' standard. Teammate Keiara-Ashley Cunningham joined Montenegro on top of the podium, this time in the 400m hurdles. Cunningham won the event in a time of 1:01.64, setting both the facility and program record.

In the 5000m racewalk, Lilian Patterson and Baileigh Morris finished 2-3 with times of 29:06.84 and 29:26.16. Freshman Sadie Heisner won the conference championship in the pole vault with a final mark of 3.40 meters, while fellow freshman Carter Hawkins finished in a tie for second with a mark of 3.25 meters. 

Kaitlyn Weber placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.31 meters. Sarah Johnson posted a third-place finish in the same event with a final jump of 11.27 meters. 

Junior Aquila Mucubaquire earned a third-place finish in the heptathlon, tallying 3875 total points. 

The women also had solid showings in the relay events, beginning with the 4x100m relay. The team made up of Gaines, Cunningham, Rhakala Blackmon, and Hawkins placed third with a time of 48.63 seconds. 

The 4x400m relay team of Montenegro, Cunningham, Sakoya Johnson and Hawkins followed, winning the conference championship in a time of 3:55.75 and setting a new school record. 

Central will turn its attention to the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, set to take place May 25-27 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
