No. 14 Eagles Split Day Two of Hampton Inn Classic

Fayette, Mo. - The No. 14 Central Methodist volleyball program split the second day of the Hampton Inn Classic Saturday inside Puckett Field House.

The Eagles were swept by No. 12 Eastern Oregon (25-21, 28-26, and 25-20) in the first match of the day. However, Central responded with a three sets to one victory over No. 25 Ottawa in the tournament finale (22-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-15).

Against EOU, Sydney Healy led the offensive push with 12 kills, while the Krystal Brauner and Shea Luby tallied 22 and 18 digs respectively. In addition, Marina Alonso dished out 12 assists, followed by Gabi Owczarek with 11.

The Mountaineers finished the morning with a .217 hitting percentage, compared to just .090 for Central.

However, CMU would bounce back against No. 25 Ottawa. After dropping the first set, Central rattled off three-straight set victories to take the match over the Braves, 3-1.

CMU featured three different Eagles with double-digit kills, led by Annabelle Maassen with 17. Callie Henson followed with 15 and Healy rounded out the trio with 10. Henson was the most efficient hitter on the afternoon with a .375 hitting percentage.

Alonso led the setters with 29 assists, in addition to 23 from Owczarek. Brauner once again led the defense with 21 digs. Maassen followed with 15 while Owczarek and Luby with 14 each.

Owczarek earned the first double-double of her career and of 2022 in the finale against Ottawa.

In addition to her 14 digs, Luby also picked up four service aces.

Central will make a trip up north to Bellevue, Neb. to compete in the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic beginning Friday, Sept. 2 against Taylor University at 3:00 p.m.
