FAYETTE, Mo. - The Avila women's basketball team defeated Central Methodist 75-64 on Saturday inside Puckett Field House in Heart of America Athletic Conference action. Central Methodist also�saw its six-game winning streak snapped.
Avila (17-8, 11-3 HAAC) jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Nakia Robinson got the Eagles on the board at the 15:19 mark of the first half. Avila built a 12-3 lead eight minutes into the game.
Loganne Grider hit a three to give Avila a 20-8 advantage. The home team began to chip away soon after.
Central Methodist (13-11, 10-4 HAAC) entered the bonus with more than nine minutes remaining in the first period. The home team converted 14�of 17 free throws in the first half, while Avila shot only four free throws in the first 20 minutes of action.
Sami Dunger converted a 10-foot jumper to cut the deficit to 27-21 with three minutes on the clock. At the 1:02 mark, Catherine Kyle turned a fastbreak into an old-fashioned three-point play to make the score 32-26 in favor of the visitors.
Avila opened the second half on a 17-5 spurt to take a lead 51-31 upper hand.
A three-pointer by Raylyn Nuss and seven-foot jumper from Sammie Gathercole, both from the corner, got Central Methodist to within 12 points at 67-55 with 3:49 left in the game, but the home team would get no closer.
Victoria Murillo scored a game-high 19 points for Avila. Rebekah Capeder and Courtney Gimlin added 12 and 11, respectively. Brittany Townsend had 10.
Robinson finished with 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting and was 7-of-10 from the foul line. Dunger recorded nine points. Kyle and Kyra Williams had seven apiece. Kyle also had six rebounds.
Avila shot 24-of-55 (43.6%) from the field. Central Methodist was 19-of-50 (38%) from the floor.
Central Methodist will host Missouri Valley on Thursday, Feb. 16. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
