FAYETTE, Mo. - Morgan Vetter scored all 20 of her points Thursday after halftime, and Central Methodist ended a three-game skid with a 90-75 win over Graceland (Iowa) in Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) action.
Alison Durst sparked the Eagles to a 40-34 halftime edge by making two of three treys in the first half, while Nakia Robinson tallied 15 of her 19 points in the final 20 minutes. Both guards were playing their final regular-season game in Puckett Fieldhouse, as Central Methodist (20-8, 11-6) is assured of a home contest in the HAAC Tournament Quarterfinals on March 6.
After going 0-of-4 from three-point range in the first half, Vetter drilled 6-of-14 from behind the arc in the final period, marking the ninth time this season she has scored at least 20 in a game.
Kyra Williams narrowly missed a triple-double, recording 12 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.
The Eagles' Taylor Cornelison had 11 points. Durst finished with nine. Jasmine Swopshire had eight points and three rebounds.
Robinson recorded four assists in the win. Burgandie Lewis and Jesse Ellis combined for 13 rebounds.
After giving up 15 offensive rebounds in the first half, Central Methodist controlled the boards in the second period by a 27-14 margin and 46-35 in the game, leading to 46 points in the paint compared to only 20 by the visitors. Despite being outrebounded in the first 20 minutes, the Eagles still owned a 26-8 points in the paint advantage.
Graceland (11-13, 7-10) took a five-point lead at the 9:18 mark of the first half after a Jerica Smith bucket as part of a 6-0 run, but the Green and Black scored 16 of the next 22 points to lead 36-31 with 3:04 to go. Williams scored the final four points of the half, giving her team the six-point advantage at the break.
Yvette Bennett canned a trey to shrink the Yellowjackets' deficit to 50-48 at the 14:24 mark of the second half before the Eagles' offense began to roll.
Robinson responded by scoring four straight points, and Vetter's second three of the game increased her team's lead to nine at 59-50. A conventional three-point play by Robinson gave the Eagles their first double-digit lead, 67-57, at the 8:09 mark.
Vetter converted 4-of-5 from distance in a three-minute, second-half stretch to help her team pull away towards the end. Central Methodist led by 19 twice in the final 3:29.
Bennett and Gabrielle Lapinski each scored 13 in the loss. Smith had 11.
The Eagles shot 54.1 percent (33-of-61) overall and 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the charity stripe, including a perfect 9-of-9 after halftime. The Green and Black totaled 27 assists on 33 made buckets.
Central Methodist travels to Peru State (Neb.) on Saturday to conclude the regular-season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CT.
