OLATHE, Kan. - No. 3-seed Central Methodist ended its 2014 Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament run with a 77-54 loss in the semifinals at No. 2-seed MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), ranked 14th in the nation, in Bell Family Arena.
MidAmerica Nazarene (26-3) booked its place in a third-straight conference tournament championship game, while the Eagles will have to wait until Wednesday, March 12, at 3 p.m. CT to see if they get an at-large bid when the 32-team field for the Division I Women's Basketball National Championship will be officially announced on NAIA.org.
Daria Sprew made 10 of 14 shots from the field and led all scorers with 23 points to go along with nine rebounds for the Pioneers. Sprew had 14 of her points in the second half as the Pioneers shot 62.1 percent (18 of 29) after the half and 53.3 percent for the game.
MidAmerica Nazarene took control of the game early, running out to an 11-2 lead after just 4:05 had elapsed. Rachel Boan had five early points that included a three-pointer to finish off the game-opening spurt.
Central Methodist (22-9) responded with a 12-5 stretch of its own to close within three following a Kyra Williams layup, but the Pioneers scored the next nine points for its first double-digit lead and took a 12-point advantage into intermission.
Morgan Vetter hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half for the Eagles to trim the lead in half and the visitors were within seven at the 15:50 mark after a three-point play by Nakia Robinson. However, two free throws by Kyleesha Weston started a 10-2 stretch over 3:46 for the Pioneers for a 15-point lead, and MidAmerica Nazarene led by double digits the rest of the way.
Boan and Kelsey Balcom added 13 points apiece for the Pioneers, who had 40 points in the paint and a 13-3 edge in points off turnovers.
Robinson had 14 points to lead the Eagles, while Jesse Ellis added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Williams chipped in 12 points. Vetter had nine points, all from behind the arc. Burgandie Lewis pulled down five rebounds.
