Massenat named Heart Freshman of the Year; three Eagles earn all-conference honors

Massenat named Heart Freshman of the Year; three Eagles earn all-conference honors

Kansas City, Mo. -  The Heart of America Athletic Conference featured three Eagles on the Heart Women's Basketball All-Conference list including the Freshman of the Year, as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon. 

The lady Eagles finished the regular season receiving votes in the latest NAIA coaches' poll and earned the No. 3 seed in the Heart South Division for the upcoming conference tournament. Central will enters postseason play with a 13-5 record overall.

Leianya Massenat was named Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference, while Daryna Bachkarova was also named first team and Leah Johnson landed a second team nomination.

Massenat put up an impressive performance in her first year as an Eagle. The freshman guard shot 38.1-percent from field averaging 19.7 points per game, which puts her in the Top-20 in the NAIA. She is also ranked No. 13 in the NAIA and leads the conference in steals per game (3.357). Massenat recorded a career high 29 points against Missouri Valley College on Nov 18 and recorded a double-double against Grand View on Jan. 23 with 26 points and 11 boards. 

Bachkarova played in only nine regular season games as a midseason transfer but secured a first team spot with an impressive run through month of January and February. The Belarus native averaged a team leading 20.3 points/game and 5.9 rebounds/game. She finished the regular season shooting 35.2-percent from the three-point line and 39.4-percent from the field. 

Johnson leads the NAIA in offensive rebounds per game (5.944), she also leads the team and the conference in rebounds with a total of 174. The New Jersey native collected a total of eight double-doubles in 18 games during the regular season, averaging 11.3 points and 9.67 rebounds/game.

The Eagles are set to face Grand View in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 6:00 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.
