Baldwin City, Kan. - No. 2 CMU Women's Basketball survived an upset bid from Baker University, 63-58 Saturday afternoon in Baldwin City, Kan.
The Eagles improve to 19-0 and 13-0 in the Heart. Baker falls to 9-9 and 5-8 in conference play.
It was polar opposite quarters in the first half, as Central stormed out to a 22-8 first quarter lead. The Wildcats would flip the script by outscoring CMU 20-6 in the second to even the score at 28-28 at halftime.
An even 16-16 third quarter saw the game remain deadlocked at 44-44 heading into the fourth. Trailing 50-48 with 7:11 remaining in the game, a steal by Jaicia Canady led to a three-point make from Leianya Massenat on the next possession to give Central a 51-50 lead.
Central would never relinquish the lead for the rest of the game, holding on for a five-point victory.
Overall, the game featured 11 ties and five lead changes.
Five Eagles reached double figures including four in the starting five. Jaicia Canady led the way with 16 points, along with seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
Zutorya Cook secured a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She also added seven assists, two blocks, and a steal. Massenat matched Cook with 11 points which included three three-point baskets. In addition, Massenat grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists, and secured two steals.
Robin Beck and Taliyah Carter rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points apiece.
As a team, CMU finished the afternoon shooting just 36.8-percent from the floor and just 20-percent from three. However, Central held Baker to only one three-point basket on 15 attempts. The Eagles also forced 21 turnovers on 14 steals.
Baker held the advantage on the glass with 41 rebounds compared to 37 for CMU.
Central returns home to host Benedictine College for the first of a two-game home stand Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. inside Puckett Field House.
